Hurricanes in Hawaii: Hurricanes are relatively rare events in the Hawaiian Islands. Records show that strong wind storms have struck all major islands in the Hawaiian Island chain since the beginning of history. The first officially recognized hurricane in Hawaiian waters was Hurricane Hiki in August of 1950.
In reality, tropical storms, including hurricanes, are relatively rare to make landfall in Hawaii. Having said that direct hits have impacted the Hawaiian Islands. The most devastating, recent was Hurricane Iniki that hit Kauai in 1992.

Only two hurricanes in recorded history have made landfall in Hawaii: Hurricane Iniki in 1992 and Hurricane Dot in 1959. Why are Hawaii hurricanes so rare? There are a few reasons. One is that the Hawaiian islands take up such a small amount of space in the Pacific Ocean, Earth's biggest ocean.
NHTSA gave the 2022 Kona an overall safety rating of five out of five stars, with five stars in the frontal and side crash tests and four stars in the rollover test.
A Kona Low is a subtropical cyclone that forms northwest of the state, outside the band of warm waters that fuel tropical storms.
Florida: 120 hurricanes
The most hurricane-prone state in the country is Florida, a state that has been hit with 120 hurricanes since 1851, with 37 of those being classified as major.
Ref. Hurricane Iniki was the costliest hurricane to strike the state of Hawaiʻi, causing $3.1 billion in damage. That made it the third-costliest United States hurricane at the time, behind Hurricane Hugo in 1989 and Hurricane Andrew in August 1992, one month prior to Iniki.
The temperature of the water at the ocean floor, which can be as deep as three and a half miles around the islands, is approximately 35 degrees. “That deep, cold ocean water churns up and that shuts off the storms,” said Weber.
“The major reason that Hawaii doesn't normally get major hurricanes nearby is that there's a strong subtropical high-pressure system that sits just to the north, and that acts to steer [storms] straight west,” Brian McNoldy, meteorologist and hurricane researcher at the University of Miami in Florida, tells Griggs.
How safe is Hawaii to live in?
Here's the latest data available, from 2022: Hawaii's violent crime rate of 2.5 incidents per 1,000 people is lower than the national rate of 4.0 and it's one point lower than what the state reported last year (2.6).
Since 1812, there have been more than 160 confirmed tsunamis. In a period of 157 years, a damaging or destructive tsunami struck the Hawaiian Islands on the average of once in every twelve years. Since 1960 no major destructive tsunami has struck the islands from distant earthquakes.
It probably comes as no surprise that Florida has been hit by more hurricanes than any other state since the inception of the Saffir/Simpson scale in 1851. Its location directly between the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico makes it susceptible to hurricanes that come from either side.

The massive mountains on the Big Island create a dry side and wet side of the Island. The prevailing trade winds approach Hawaii from the North East. When the winds bring humid ocean air up against the mountains it provides lots of rain on the East side of the Island.

The last tsunami to impact West Hawaii was March 11, 2011, causing extensive damage from South Kona to South Kohala but no injuries or deaths. The hard-hit Kona Village Resort has yet to rebuild and reopen from the devastation caused by the waves triggered by the magnitude-9.1 earthquake off Japan.

When did tsunami hit Kona?
Over 200 waves were recorded in varying heights. The counties sustained damage of approximately $7.5 million, equating to over $8.725 million today. President Obama declared this a Major Disaster for the State of Hawaii on April 8th 2011.

Located only 10 miles (15 km) from the coastal areas of the town of Kailua-Kona, the summit of Hualālai rises to 8,271 ft (2,521 m).
When the swell direction is just right, Kona can get some pretty impressive waves. However, the shadowing effect from the other Hawaiian islands means that Kona doesn't see the same number of big waves that you might see on the shores of Oahu, Maui, and Kauai.
The short answer? No, not directly. The Kona coffee belt is located about two and a half hours away from Kilauea and since all of the lava is contained inside the caldera like the water inside of a pool, the Kona coffee belt is in no direct danger from this eruption, and never will be.
Kailua-Kona is located in Lava Zone 4, which includes all of Hualalai. Although Hualalai is not extinct, the frequency of eruptions is lower, much lower, than that for Kilauea or Mauna Loa.
It has erupted over 150 times in the last 1000 years, with the previous eruption ending on April 15, 1984 and the most recent eruption happening from November 27 to December 10, 2022.
All low-lying coastal areas, harbors, streams, and rivers in Hawai'i are vulnerable to tsunami impacts. Tsunamis can occur at any time. Earthquakes or landslides that may trigger tsunamis cannot be forecast.
The youngest flow along this coastline is 137 years old and is located on the north end of Kiholo Bay. The flows around Kona Village and the airport are nearly 200 years old. The rest of the flows are over 1,500 years in age.
Kona coffee is a specialty coffee that differs from other varieties primarily because of its prime farming location and production processes. Kona coffee farms are only in one place in Hawaii called the Kona Coffee Belt, on Hualalai and Mauna Loa in the North and South districts.
Is Kona always rainy?
While for most of Hawaii, the winter months are generally the rainiest, Kona's drier season is generally from November through March, while the rainy season runs from April through October.
As mentioned above the Kona district lies on the leeward (dry) side of the Big Island and has very little precipitation. Kona is the only region in the islands where summer rainfall exceeds winter rainfall.
